Spinal Fusion Surgery in India

What are the Reasons for Spinal Fusion Surgery?
Lumbar fusion surgery may be indicated for a variety of lumbar spine problems. Generally, lumbar spine problems are first treated conservatively. Then, if low back pain, numbness, tingling or weakness in the legs does not improve, some individuals may be candidates for lumbar spine fusion surgery. The most common reason for surgery is leg pain or sciatica. This pain may be the result of a herniated lumber disc causing pressure on one or more of the spinal nerves. Leg pain may also be caused by abnormal motion of the vertebrae.
What Conditions are treated with Spinal Fusion Surgery?
Spondylolisthesis :
In this condition one vertebra has slipped forward over another. If the vertebra continues to slip back and forth, the spinal nerves may be affected, causing leg pain, numbness, tingling and/or weakness. A spinal fusion may be recommended to stop this abnormal motion.
Degenerative Disc Disease :
In degenerative disc disease, the discs or cushion pads between the vertebrae shrink, which can cause abnormal motion and possibly an unstable area in spine. As a result, the vertebrae may compress the spinal nerves, leading to leg pain
Arthritis:
Severe arthritis of the spine is called spinal stenosis. As the body ages, worn vertebrae and discs may develop bony spurs, which may cause stenosis, or narrowing of the openings for the spinal cord and nerves. These spurs irritate the spinal nerve roots and cause pain, numbness, tingling or weakness down the legs. Sometimes this condition requires lumbar fusion surgery to stabilize the spine, and prevent abnormal motion after pressure on the spinal nerves is removed.A spinal fusion surgery is designed to stop the motion at a painful vertebral segment, which in turn should decrease pain generated from the joint. All lumbar spinal fusion surgery involves adding bone graft to an area of the spine to set up a biological response that causes the bone graft to grow between the two vertebral elements and thereby stop the motion at that segment. For patients with the following conditions, abnormal and excessive motion at a vertebral segment may result in pain:
- Degenerative disc disease
- Isthmic, degenerative or postlaminectomy spondylolisthesis.
Other conditions that may be treated by a spinal fusion surgery include a weak or unstable spine (caused by infections or tumors), fractures, scoliosis or deformity.

Haley a Manchester patient describes about her Spinal Fusion Surgery and her stay in Hyderabad India.
“I had a lumber spinal fusion (bone grafts only, no instrumentation) after breaking my back and with an excellent surgeon performing the operation I went on to lead a very active life. However, over time the bony fusion became unstable, vertebras moved, discs crushed and the pain prevented me from working, driving or sitting down without severe pain. For me, sleeping was a thing of the past. “The NHS told me I would always be in pain so I paid to have x-rays taken and travelled three hundred miles to see a very eminent surgeon. From the x-rays and examination he felt a re-fusion with instrumentation would give me a very good result with a possibility of a 70% reduction in pain. I was unable to get a surgeon in my area to do the surgery on the NHS and after discussing the problems with my GP he felt that I would not get the surgery I needed on the NHS (chronic pain not being a priority for primary care trust) so I considered going abroad for my surgery because financing the surgery I would need in Queensland would be impossible for me. After some research I on internet I decided to go to India through Dheeraj Bojwani Consultants.“The hospital was only 30 minutes from the airport. I admit I was still cautious but once I spoke with my surgeon all my doubts disappeared. He looked at my notes, x-rays and MRI scans and I had more x-rays and MRI scans. That evening the surgeon explained that he wanted to do two spinal operations which would last nine hours. He performed three procedures: He went through my stomach to insert a metal cage between the collapsing vertebras and then put bone grafts around the metal cage, he opened the cage so now there is a correct space between the vertebras and the pressure is no longer on my spinal chord. He then worked on my back, re-aligning the spine and then inserting three metal rods and six screws with a view to getting up to 90% pain relief. The services were really good; I did not had to worry about anything. And most important, the doctors and people working in Hospital made us special, because we were treated as their family member. Everyone at the hospital was very friendly and warm as well as dedicated and professional. The trip to India and the procedure of Spine Fusion Surgery was made very much easier because of the wonderful people at the hospital. Guest Relation Officers of the Dheeraj Bojwani Consultants in India had made the arrangements for everything from lodging to transportation. Everything went well and as planned. I really thank Dr Dheeraj Bojwani.”

Kimberly a Sydney Patient on her surgery in Cervical Spine Discectomy, Disc Replacement and Fusion Surgery Bangalore India.

Kimberly a Sydney Patient on her Cervical Spine Discectomy, Disc Replacement and Fusion surgery in Bangalore India -
“I discovered that I had developed degenerative disc problems in my cervical spine. This is part of the aging process, but in my case the degeneration was further compounded by the fact that I had developed poor posture from sitting over a computer for long hours. A cervical x-ray was taken to determine the cause of my extremely severe pain in the left shoulder arm and fingers. As of the present time, I am told it might be another 2-3 months before my appointment. Living on narcotic painkillers really messed me up big time. I knew some thing had to be done, but what? I do not know any important people who could help me out. I read an interesting article on Internet “Sun, Surf and Surgery. This article basically said that there is alternatives to the long consultation and surgery wait lists that are now infamous in Canada. After reading the article twice or so, I contacted Dr Dheeraj Bojwani, of Dheeraj Bojwani Consultants in India. Dr Dheeraj Bojwani very clearly indicated that there are options available to ordinary working Canadians. After a few e-mails and lengthy phone conversations, including one from Consultant Spine Surgeon, who called me at home for a forty-five minute discussion on the type of surgery that he, could perform. After that call, I knew that I had to do something. I was to take a monster step in my life and travel to India for surgery. India, that is on the other side of the world, Dr Dheeraj Bojwani, in no uncertain terms was my guiding light through the whole process. He reassured me countless times that I would do well. Dr Dheeraj Bojwani, in my mind is an extremely dedicated and extremely caring individual. Upon arrival to India, my every concern was addressed. It was not uncommon to have five to seven senior medical staff in my room at one time. They would be checking me over for the next test or asking what I wished for dinner or just checking up on me. I can honestly say that my surgeon is a top-notch surgeon, who is extremely knowledgeable and a truly caring professional. He went the extra mile for me. I cannot say enough about the hospital staff from the nurses who are all young but qualified registered nurses, to the coordinator of the International patient program, every one was extremely helpful and kind. Upon discharge, the hospital transferred me to one of the nicest hotels in Delhi for a few days, and then I was taken to a five star resort about one hour from the city for further recovery. In closing, I can say it was truly a lifetime experience.”

Robert Jackson a Maryland patient’s testimonial on Spinal Fusion Surgery in Chennai India

A Maryland Patient Robert Jackson for his Spinal Fusion Surgery Chennai India -
“I had both LED and IDET performed on 3 consecutive low back discs. Prior to surgery, I was experiencing some low back pain at all times, with periods of severe pain and immobility. Bulging discs would put pressure on a nerve in my spine, if I made a wrong movement. The condition was getting noticeably worse for about 10 years. Chiropractic treatments and physical therapy only gave temporary relief my job in machinery repair had involved substantial lifting. My lifestyle had included weight training, running, and sailing. I was forced to work from a desk, and had to limit my activity. I was taking increasing doses of painkillers several times per day. The pain and depression were getting tough to handle.
I began to research back pain on the Internet, and learned of Dheeraj Bojwani Consultants. I spoke Dr. Dheeraj Bojwani. A discogram showed that I was a candidate for LED and IDET, and surgery was scheduled my surgery with Dheeraj Bojwani Consultants in India.
I arrived for surgery late in the morning, and was taken in about noon. I was pretty groggy when I woke up. I was feeling a lot of stiffness and some pain in the lower left back area, the entry point for the procedures. I was able to sit up and get dressed about an hour later. I took the next week off from work. There was a fair bit of pain, mostly on the left side. The pain was similar to, but less than the worst pain before the surgery. My wife drove me to work one week later. I had a riser placed on my desk for my PC and a writing area, so that I could stand at my desk. I was not allowed to sit or drive for at least 2 months following surgery, to minimize disc pressure. I was able to put in 12-13 hour workdays with the help of a back brace and Vicodin.
I began long walks 4 weeks after surgery. I dropped the brace and began to sit at work. I am now doing mild abdominal exercises and 40 minutes of Stairmaster per day. During passive activity, I feel no back pain. There is some pain during light lifting or stretching moves, similar to knee and shoulder surgeries I have had before, but I have taken painkillers only 3-4 times in the past month. I am meeting with a physical therapist today to assess my condition. I want to accelerate my exercise routine, but don’t want to push too hard too fast. Thanks Dr. Dheeraj Bojwani for the opportunity to get my surgery done in India, and getting me back to feeling better!”
